The Decision Matrix
| Question | CNC Plasma | Pug | Gas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tolerance needed? | ±1–2 mm | ±2–4 mm | ±3–6 mm |
| Complex profile / shape? | Yes — any DXF | Straight/simple only | Simple only |
| Very thick plate (100mm+)? | Up to 150mm | Medium thickness | Excellent |
| Bevel / chamfer needed? | Limited | No | Yes |
| High volume, low cost? | Medium cost | Low cost | Low cost |
| DXF file available? | Preferred | Not needed | Not needed |
Use CNC Plasma When...
You need a custom profile or shape from a DXF drawing
Dimensional accuracy of ±1–2mm is required
The part goes directly into machining or assembly without further fitting
You need holes or internal cutouts in the same operation
Use Pug Cutting When...
You need large quantities of straight-cut plate sections
±2–4mm tolerance is acceptable (structural plate, tank shells)
You want to minimise cutting cost on a high-volume order
Use Gas Cutting When...
Plates are very thick (typically above plasma's practical range)
You need bevel (angled) cuts for weld joint preparation
Dimensional tolerance is not critical (heavy structural work)
